After\u00a026 years of production mixing, I thought I&#8217;d learned to spot the occasional con-artist. I&#8217;ve also learned to be wary of last minute, <strong>day-before production calls<\/strong>. But somehow, as I was in the midst of a separate, 70-day job\u00a0that kept<strong> pushing its start date<\/strong>, I failed to spot these\u00a0beggars among thieves: \u00a0A <strong>con-artist<\/strong>, represented by a <strong>bench-warmer<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>producer<\/strong>, supposedly referred to me by a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soundone.net\/\">friend<\/a><\/strong>, for a last-minute, day-before call, who BEGGED me to take the job, calling me back even after I first turned it down. \u00a0The producer was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/fdpfilms\"><strong>Franklin Delano Bryant<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_646\" style=\"width: 536px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-14-at-5.27.23-PM.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-646\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-646 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-14-at-5.27.23-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-08-14 at 5.27.23 PM\" width=\"526\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-14-at-5.27.23-PM.png 526w, https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-14-at-5.27.23-PM-300x268.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-646\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nice selfie, Del. Pretty bad-ass dye job on the goatee.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Bryant seems to be perpetually pitching low-budget projects, or shooting wedding video, or real estate video listings on a Canon 5D. Virtually everybody I&#8217;ve asked in the DFW film production crew base <strong>has never heard of him, <\/strong>or his<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>internet placeholder<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gpproductions.biz\/\">Gibraltar Pacific Productions.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-14-at-6.24.55-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-658 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-14-at-6.24.55-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-08-14 at 6.24.55 PM\" width=\"719\" height=\"462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-14-at-6.24.55-PM.png 719w, https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-14-at-6.24.55-PM-300x193.png 300w, https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-14-at-6.24.55-PM-624x401.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 719px) 100vw, 719px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, as most normal folks tend to chalk these things up to bad Karma or whatever, I pursued the pair in court, if nothing else, just to see what would happen next. As a sole-provider of a family of 4, I admittedly get a little hot-under-the-collar when I&#8217;m not paid for a completed gig.<\/p>\n<p>True story:\u00a0about 20 years ago, a producer was about a year late in paying our crew. On an impulse, I took a <strong>mechanics lien<\/strong> of sorts, using his\u00a0camera as <strong>collateral.<\/strong>\u00a0This\u00a0produced terrific results. I was immediately\u00a0escorted by his accountant to the nearest ATM. At the time, little did I (or he) know, \u00a0that I was committing a felony. \u00a0Ah, the impertinence of youth!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_693\" style=\"width: 621px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-15-at-3.10.51-AM.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-693\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-693 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-15-at-3.10.51-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"611\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-15-at-3.10.51-AM.png 611w, https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-15-at-3.10.51-AM-300x245.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 611px) 100vw, 611px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tough to collect on lawyer commercials in the late &#8217;90&#8217;s. I could write a book<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I easily\u00a0obtained a <strong>judgment<\/strong>\u00a0 on both Del and Ross in small claims court, to the tune of about $2500, (including court and process server costs, and a 5% per-\u00a0year increase). Of course, a judgment doesn&#8217;t mean you should expect to be <strong>paid<\/strong>. \u00a0But, there are various remedies to be pursued: writs of <strong>execution<\/strong> and <strong>garnishment<\/strong>, liberal use of <strong>collection agencies<\/strong>, <strong>credit reporting<\/strong> on the debtor, and generally being a <strong>pain-in-the-ass <\/strong>to the poor fellows, which I like to do between gigs, or whenever I feel like it. Like now, for instance.<a href=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/judgment-pic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-650\" src=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/judgment-pic.png\" alt=\"judgment pic\" width=\"896\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/judgment-pic.png 896w, https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/judgment-pic-300x95.png 300w, https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/judgment-pic-624x198.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 896px) 100vw, 896px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ross<\/strong> was particularly hard to find, as he does his <strong>fly-by-night act<\/strong> pretty well. The last judgment I found on him, for over $10000, shows that he uses\u00a0at least\u00a0<strong>four home addresses.<a href=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-14-at-5.54.42-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-654\" src=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-14-at-5.54.42-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-08-14 at 5.54.42 PM\" width=\"995\" height=\"109\" srcset=\"https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-14-at-5.54.42-PM.png 995w, https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-14-at-5.54.42-PM-300x33.png 300w, https:\/\/txsound.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-14-at-5.54.42-PM-624x68.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 995px) 100vw, 995px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> \u00a0<\/strong>He has over <strong>30 dba&#8217;<\/strong>s in Dallas county, and even uses his <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Bross201?fref=ts\">23 year-old son<\/a>\u00a0(facebook link)<\/strong>\u00a0as a <strong>signee<\/strong> on some of them. Since he did this with Mpressive Films, I had to <strong>sue his son<\/strong>, as much as I would have liked to leave the poor boy out of the picture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Delano Bryant\u00a0<\/strong>was very easy to find, as this man, in his 50&#8217;s, still\u00a0lived\u00a0<strong>at home<\/strong> with his <strong>Mom &amp; Dad<\/strong>. I served a <strong>writ of execution<\/strong> on him at the house, (which really pissed off his 84 year old Dad- they share the same name. It\u00a0turned out that Del has no real assets in his own name. \u00a0Despite the house\u00a0having 3 or 4 vehicles and a Harley and a pimped-out pickup truck, they were all owned in\u00a0title by his parents or his siblings. He told the Constable that he was unemployed, and had no personal assets of any kind. But his family is willing to<strong> tote-the-note<\/strong> on his shiny truck and motorcycle. Hard times, Del? Not great marriage material.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway the story is not nearly over, as I have several more surprises for this pair of <strong>malcontents<\/strong>. My real work as a sound mixer keeps me a little too busy to turn the screws on these two on a regular basis. But, a judgment lasts <strong>10 years<\/strong> in Texas, and is renewable. Maybe I&#8217;ll take it up as my hobby when I retire.<\/p>\n<p>We eventually found <strong>Ross<\/strong> living with his son and a\u00a0<strong>momfriend<\/strong>\u00a0(as opposed to a girlfriend) in a hovel, nestled in a sketchy south Dallas neighborhood.\u00a0It&#8217;s actually not his <strong>Official Address<\/strong>;\u00a0 for that, he uses\u00a0his real<strong> Mom&#8217;s<\/strong> house. David calls the police pretty quickly when confronted. He also tends to spin some tall tales when backed into a corner. So after my visit a couple of months ago, and David&#8217;s inevitable <strong>911 call,\u00a0<\/strong>I couldn&#8217;t help but create a little <strong>mash-up video<\/strong> of my visit and the 911 call. \u00a0So here it is. Enjoy, and look for the next episode, coming whenever I <strong>feel like it<\/strong>! Of course, they could just pay the bill, and I&#8217;ll hit the <strong>delete<\/strong> key.
